Part 2 - The Experience
Going into "The Detox" my main concern was a drop in energy level/lethargy, increased hunger and inability to focus on tasks due to low caloric intake. Throughout the detox I consumed 3 liters to 4 liters of juice daily which I prepared at the start of the day and consumed fresh coconut water once a day to give myself an extra boost of energy. Surprisingly enough, I didn't feel much of a change in energy levels during the detox and neither did I have cravings or hunger pangs. With that said, I must mention that I have a fairly clean diet in which I consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables on a daily basis so the transition into a juice detox was not necessarily a major change to my lifestyle. My experience during the detoxification process was influenced by my personal health and lifestyle choices which is why, anyone reading this post should note that the impact of a juice detox varies from individual to individual and one's experience is unlikely going to be identical to the next person on "The Detox".
Here is a day-by-day break down of how I felt on the 9-day juice detox:
The first day went by quite easily, I continued with my daily activities and even made time for a HIIT workout. Energy level stayed pretty high and I went to bed at my usual bed. No headaches or hunger pangs felt.
Here is a day-by-day break down of how I felt on the 9-day juice detox:
Day 1:
Day 2:
Energy levels remained constant but I didn't manage to include a workout today. A mild headache came on around 7 pm but faded off by bedtime.
Day 3:
Day 3 is supposedly the lowest point of the detox but I didn't feel much of a difference. I was out and about the entire day and had a great amount of energy, which was absolutely wonderful. It's nice that the "crash" didn't happen but I wonder if it's going to happen over the next few days. However, the same mild-headache occurred again during the evening.
Day 4:
Managed to go for a nice short 5 km run today and energy level still stayed pretty high. I didn't experience the mild headache today so I guess the "crash" didn't happen after all. I'm feeling pretty good about this. Also, I consider this the half way mark so I decided to weigh myself.
Weight loss at half-way mark : 2.5 kg
Day 5:
I didn't manage to exercise today but I did spend the entire day out running errands. I felt really energetic despite the constant walking around under the hot sun (that's Singapore weather for you).
Day 6:
Pretty similar to day 5, didn't get to squeeze in a workout but had a really busy day which went great cuz of the high energy level.
Day 7:
I don't know if my brain is playing tricks with me but my skin feels and looks pretty great. I have no blemishes and my dark circles are less apparent than usual, which is a big deal for me because I constantly look like I've got a black eye.
Day 8:
Plenty of energy today so I went for a 8 km run and I'm starting to miss the feeling of biting into food. Not necessarily cooked food but chewing mainly. I can't wait to bite into an apple that isn't destined to be juiced into oblivion.
Day 9:
It's finally the last day! It was hard preparing dinner for the family the past couple of days and not being able to taste-test or even try out my own creations but today, I will be having a hot bowl of strained tomato, carrot and onion soup. Boy did that soup feel great going down. I had to drink warm water the past 8 days to feel the satisfaction of having warmth go down my throat.
Total weight loss: 4 kg
Those were my daily entries during the 9 day detox. My friends were oddly curious about my egestion pattern so in case anyone wants to know, I had a single bowel movements daily. The results were pretty great in terms of energy levels and how great my skin felt also, not feeling bloated after my juice "meals" was a pleasant feeling. I guess the only downside for me was when I started missing the sensation of chewing solid food.
Would I do this again? Definitely! However, maybe just for 5 days the next time and more variations in juice recipes.
Well, that's it for this installation of "The Detox" series. The next and last post will be on the recipes I used on the different days (you will realise how little variety I had, primarily because of my laziness to search up other recipes).
Till next time 😄
Till next time 😄
