The Detox: Part 1- The Premise

"The Detox" will be a 3-part series of posts that will bring you through my 9-day detox experience from start to finish with information on the detox, daily updates and juice recipes, all in separate posts. This first post in the series aims to set the premise to why I carried out the detox and what it is essentially about. Enjoy reading!

Part 1- The Premise

After months of taking various medications, my body became reliant on them to function properly and as a result, my metabolism started failing me and my energy levels dropped drastically. Which is why, I needed to reboot my digestion and get my body back into shape once again.

I remembered watching this documentary named "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" by Joe Cross a year or two back in which a sickly and overweight man, Joe Cross himself, adopts a 60-day juice fast to shed the pounds and lengthen his lifespan. He suffered from an autoimmune condition for which he had to take medication regularly for years and despite his many efforts to lose weight, he was rather unsuccessful due to his past of consuming processed food, alcoholism and smoking. However, when he finally went on this juice fast and adopted a plant-based diet, he managed to lose a whopping 100 pounds, experienced a large decrease in his LDL cholesterol and no longer has to rely as heavily on medication.

I wanted to experience the great health benefits Joe Cross did on the juice fast and get a kick-start on my journey to get fit again. The difference however was that I for no reason had to lose nearly as much weight as Joe Cross did or even alter my cholesterol by the slightest because by statistics I had a healthy BMI and healthy cholesterol level which weren't of concern but, what did bother me was the lethargy and the physical changes I had experienced. Being constantly low on energy made it hard for me to focus and be enthusiastic about much during those few months of taking medication, and it irked me that I was no longer able to fit into my own clothes. The frustration with my body eventually peaked and I made up my mind to do a proper detox to cleanse my system off toxins and get a fresh start on my journey. Only problem was, I did not know which detox to go on and how to go about it safely.

At a very opportune moment, my friend informed me about a workshop her personal health coach was conducting on juice detoxing  and I signed up right away. I attended Tania Schnuppe's workshop which was largely based on the juice fast Joe Cross went on however, she suggested going on a 10-day juice detox instead to reboot our digestion. After she went through the process of doing a detox, I realised that my diet was already at a point where I could start with the detox immediately. Instead of 10 days, I only had 9 days to carry out the detox because I had a flight to catch and would not have the resources to do the detox while overseas. So directly after the workshop I went to the market and bought all the fresh vegetables and fruits I would need for the first few days of juicing and started my detox the next day on 9 December.

As I draft this post, I'm in the midst of my detox and am still awaiting the final results on day 9. The following 2 posts will cover the rest of my detox experience more in-depth with a day-by-day breakdown of how I felt and what I did, and the recipes I used, in two different posts while the last post in "The Detox" series will share how I feel after the detox finishes, how my first meal (which is sadly going to be airplane food) goes down, the overall changes in energy level and the total weight loss I experience..

I hope you keep reading my blog and stay tuned to my detox journey!😊
